NATO chief rejects calls for abandoning nuclear deterrence policy

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Berlin, Mar 12, IRNA -- NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen reiterated on Friday his commitment to nuclear deterrence amid mounting calls within the western military pact to press ahead with nuclear disarmament.

Addressing an international conference on NATO's new strategy in the Polish capital Warsaw, Rasmussen said," For our deterrence to remain credible, I firmly believe it must continue to be based on a mix of conventional and nuclear capabilities. And our new strategic concept should affirm that."

Rasmussen's statements on maintaining nuclear deterrence came in the wake of German news reports which said that Germany, the Benelux countries and Norway had sent a letter to the NATO chief urging a debate on the future nuclear strategy of the military alliance.

Berlin has spearheaded diplomatic efforts to put nuclear disarmament on the agenda of NATO's next meeting.
