3/6/2010 - SOUTHWEST ASIA -- Coalition airpower integrated with ground forces in Iraq and the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan in the following operations March 03 according to Combined Air and Space Operations Center officials here.
Air Operations in Afghanistan:
Close Air Support
Asmar, RC-E
U.S. Air Force F-16C Fighting Falcon pilots provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. Pilots released precision-guided munitions on enemy forces firing at friendly forces. Later, pilots responded to a report of friendly forces taking enemy-sniper fire and released a precision-guided munition on the enemy-sniper's position. Last, pilots observed an enemy fighting position that posed an imminent threat to friendly forces in the area. A precision-guided munition was released against the enemy position. All actions by the pilots were declared successful when the threats to friendly forces were eliminated.
Balocan, RC-E
A U.S. Air Force B-1B Lancer aircrew provided armed overwatch and conducted shows of force in support of a friendly-forces convoy when suspicious personnel were observed gathering along the route of the convoy. The shows of force were declared successful and the aircrew resumed armed overwatch until the friendly convoy left the area.
U.S. Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt II pilots arrived on-station and conducted a show of force, with flares launched, that was declared successful by ground control.
U.S. Navy F/A-18F Super Hornet aircrews provided armed overwatch for friendly forces and observed possible enemy forces planting an improvised-explosive device. Aircrews conducted a show of force to deter the suspicious activity, which was declared successful.
Chahar Bagh, RC-S
A B-1B aircrew provided armed overwatch for a friendly-forces dismounted patrol. The friendly patrol reported taking sporadic enemy fire and the aircrew conducted a show of force to deter enemy fire. Ground control declared the show of force successful when no further enemy action was noted.
Airlift Action
Helmand Province, RC-S
A U.S. Air Force C-17 Globemaster III aircrew flew combat-resupply missions in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, airdropping approximately 72,000 pounds of supplies to friendly forces.
Paktika Province, RC-E
A U.S. Air Force C-17 Globemaster III aircrew flew a combat-resupply mission in Oruzgan Province, Afghanistan, airdropping approximately 60,000 pounds of supplies to friendly forces.
