PORT HUENEME Calif. (NNS) -- Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 40 took another step toward deployment readiness Feb. 5.
NMCB 40's medical department completed two weeks of Tactical Combat Care of Casualties (TCCC) training. Receiving this level of training is required of any Navy unit's medical department expected to deploy to a combat zone or hostile area of responsibility.
The training is a little more intense than what NMCB 40 hospital corpsmen usually receive. TCCC enables them to practice certain procedures on one another and get hands-on experience in their field of expertise.
"When we're able to take care of life-threatening emergencies and working on the human body, the training is immensely helpful rather than just learning from a book," said Chief Hospital Corpsman Joel Steward, senior medical department representative, NMCB 40.
One of NMCB 40's corpsmen who was involved in the training said it will help prepare him to be that much better when he deploys to Afghanistan, and enable him to take care of his Seabees if the need should arise.
"The training we received is something new to me. It showed me the importance of seeing some of the procedures up close and personal. It reminds you, you're dealing with some potentially very serious situations in the medical field," said Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class Shaun Thomas.
"It gives us the skills and just as important the sense of confidence in those skills, which will pay in dividends if the situation to use those skills should present itself," said Steward.
