SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff visited Naval Special Warfare members San Diego March 4.

Adm. Mike Mullen was briefed on current operations and capabilities, and spoke with several combat-experienced SEALs who recently returned from an overseas deployment.

Mullen observed SEAL candidates training at Naval Special Warfare Center and told them on how important they were to the future of national defense.

"At this time in our country's history we need each and every one of you. We need you to succeed here because we need you to succeed out there," he said. "Don't quit, and I will see you out in the fleet."

At an all hands call, Mullen said Naval Special Warfare's impact upon the current fight was "invaluable" and growth of the force is paramount.

"The expectations for you to be successful on these missions will continue to grow, and it will have an affect here whether it is numbers of platoons or numbers of squadrons."

Mullen was presented with a personalized boat paddle to commemorate his visit by Commander, Naval Special Warfare Command Rear Adm. Edward Winters III, and briefly spoke with local news media before departing.

Mullen was sworn in as the 17th chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff on October 2007. He serves as the principal military advisor to the president, the secretary of defense, the National Security Council, and the Homeland Security Council.
