NAVAL AIR STATION NORTH ISLAND, Calif. (NNS) -- Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit (EODMU) One family and friends gathered at the Naval Station North Island (NASNI) air terminal in the early morning hours Feb. 25 to say goodbye to loved ones deploying for a seven-month mission in Bahrain.
Commander Douglas W. Czarnecki, EODMU 1 commanding officer, said he was excited to return to Bahrain, having been stationed there almost ten years ago.
"We are deploying to Bahrain in support of CTG [Commander Task Group] 56.1 and to head up diving and salvage operations for 5th fleet as well as operations [in the region]," Czarnecki said.
Among his varied missions, EODMU 1 will commence diving operations in support of ship maintenance and repair to vessels in the area.
"We are looking forward to a good deployment," said Gunner's Mate 1st Class Anthony R. Doura. "We will be making some stops along the way but we will ultimately end up in Bahrain."
Among EODMU One Sailors deploying are Electrician's Mate 1st Class Rodolfo Dabu and Equipment Operator Second Class Greg Lain, two reservists mobilized Jan. 29.
"We were called up to serve, and we will remain active for a minimum of one year," Dabu said. "This is a great group of people to serve with."
Explosive ordnance disposal technicians, Navy divers and their supporting teams are extremely important elements to many military situations. Through hard work and extensive training these individuals render safe the multitudes of roadside bombs, caches of weapons, landmines and conduct all aspects of diving and underwater mine countermeasures.
EODMU 1 is homeported onboard Naval Base Coronado in San Diego, and is a deployable unit under EOD Group One, part of the Navy Expeditionary Combat Command (NECC).
Navy EOD is considered the world's premier combat forces for countering IED, weapons of mass destruction, and other types of ordnance. Navy EOD technicians and divers are frequently first responders, enabling access for further combat operations.
