GUANTANAMO BAY, Cuba (NNS) -- The Harpers Ferry-class dock landing ship USS Carter Hall (LSD 50) concluded its participation in the joint humanitarian assistance mission Operation Unified Response and departed from Haiti, Mar. 1. Carter Hall arrived on station in Haiti Jan. 18, following a 7.0 magnitude earthquake that devastated the Caribbean nation Jan. 12.

The crew provided an essential role during the operations by working around the clock to transport critical supplies on multiple occasions from Naval Base Guantanamo Bay, Cuba to Haiti. Carter Hall delivered more than 1,100 pallets of food rations and water, 5,000 cots, and 338 tents during the six-weeks it supported Operation Unified Response.

"Every day our Sailors stepped forward and asked 'what can I do,'" said Cmdr. George Doyon, Carter Hall commanding officer. "It was inspiring to see their commitment to this mission. It is something that I will remember for a long time."

In addition to transferring the supplies, more than 150 Carter Hall Sailors supported medical and relief missions ashore, including clean-up efforts and logistics support. Navy doctors, hospital corpsmen, and other Sailors worked alongside a team of international doctors providing medical and dental care at a field hospital near Hospital Cardinal Leger in Leogane, Haiti.

"I had the opportunity to work with medical professionals from different countries," said Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class (SW/FMF) Sergio Hernandez. "I learned from them and got to see how they do their jobs. It was fascinating to see so many different approaches to medicine."

Carter Hall will return to its homeport in Little Creek, Va.
