Attacks in Afghanistan Kill 4 NATO Troops, 5 Afghans
VOA News 01 March 2010
Afghan officials say four Afghan civilians and a NATO soldier have been killed in a suicide bomb attack targeting international forces in Kandahar province.
The car bomber hit a NATO convoy Monday as it crossed a bridge on a road leading to Kandahar airport. The Taliban claimed responsibility.
Later, police say another car bomb exploded outside police headquarters in Kandahar city, killing one police officer and wounding 16 others.
NATO reported three other troops were killed Monday in a rocket attack in western Afghanistan and small arms fire in the south.
Afghan and international troops continue to fortify positions in the town of Marjah in Helmand province. Commanders say the capture of the Taliban-held town is the first step in a broader offensive aimed at pushing out the Taliban from its southern stronghold.
International and Afghan forces are expected to later target Taliban strongholds in the provincial capital of neighboring Kandahar province.
After clearing Taliban-held areas, commanders say are quickly bringing in Afghan district officials and police to begin providing security and public services to locals.
