USS Rentz Arrives in Iwakuni

IWAKUNI, Japan (NNS) -- The Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigate USS Rentz (FFG 46) arrived at Marine Corp Air Station (MCAS) Iwakuni, Japan, Feb. 28 for a port visit.

Upon arrival, Rentz was met by Col. Michael O'Halloran, the commanding officer of MCAS Iwakuni, and other senior members of the U.S. Marine Corps.

Cmdr. Jeffery Miller, Rentz's commanding officer, gave O'Halloran a tour of the ship and presented him with souvenirs, including a framed photograph of the frigate, a command ballcap and a command coin.

Miller expressed his admiration for the Marine Corps and for the local Japanese businessmen who will host some of his officers and crew during the Sailors' port visit to Iwakuni.

"I would like the Sailors to enjoy their port visit, learn more about the local culture and interact with the local populace," said Miller. "My one goal is to ensure that my crew begins to better understand one of the United States' closest allies in the Far East."

Miller spoke of the local tours offered by the Marine Corps to the Kintai Castle, Kintai Bridge and Hiroshima. He also spoke of a community service opportunity at a local nature preserve in Nagatani where sailors will work with the locals to restore a nature preserve.

Rentz will also be providing tours to personnel stationed at MCAS Iwakuni.

Additionally, Miller expressed his appreciation of the Japanese culture and his crew's desire to enjoy traditional Japanese cuisine. Miller and his crew expect to stay for several days in the local area, enjoying the fine food, friendly company and interesting sites.
