SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- Personnel from Navy Medicine West (NMW) who were deployed in support Operation Unified Response returned to San Diego Feb. 23.
The service members provided humanitarian assistance and disaster relief in Haiti for more than a month aboard USS Bataan (LHD 5), which is homeported in Norfolk, Va.
"I'm very proud of our Navy Medicine West staff. Those who supported Haiti were trained and ready, so were able to deploy on very short notice, while our staff that remained in the region were able to mitigate the impact on our local facilities and ensure patient care continued as usual," said Commander, Navy Medicine West, Rear Adm. Christine M. Bruzek-Kohler. "We were honored to serve those in need."
The 87 personnel who returned included a broad range of doctors, nurses, hospital corpsmen, logistics specialists and other augment staff that provided medical care and other support to the victims of the 7.0 magnitude earthquake that struck Haiti on Jan. 12.
Supporting service members came from multiple Military Treatment Facilities from across Navy Medicine West to include: Naval Medical Center San Diego, Naval Hospital and Naval Dental Clinic Camp Pendleton, Naval Hospitals Twentynine Palms, Lemoore, Oak Harbor and Bremerton.
