DETROIT ARSENAL, Mich. -- The second contingency team of the 127th Wing Air National Guard Security Forces Squadron returned Thursday, Feb. 25, from deployment in support of Operation New Dawn.
Chris Platz, a full-time employee of the Directorate of Plans, Training, Mobilization and Security at the Detroit Arsenal, also serves as the 127th SFS commander and had recently been activated with the unit to Iraq.
“It’s awesome to be back and reunite with my family,” said Platz.
A newlywed, Platz married his wife just one month before deploying.
“We didn’t want to wait,” said Lisa Platz, also a captain in the military. “We knew we wanted to spend the rest of our lives together, and I knew he was coming home.”
After six months of being separated from his family, Platz is looking forward to doing simple everyday activities to reintegrate.
“I’m looking forward to beating him in XBOX,” said Platz’s stepson, Nolan Peek, 11. “I’ve been practicing while he was away. It’ll be my highlight.”
Platz will return to his position as an anti-terrorism officer at DPTMS following a month of leave.
“We’re proud to support all of our Warfighters—active duty, guard, and reservists—who serve our country,” said Alan Parks, deputy garrison manager. “The returning servicemembers bring a valuable perspective to the table and are important assets to our team. We’re glad to have them home.”
The 127th SFS provided air base ground defense on Camp Sather at the Baghdad International Airport. No casualties occurred during deployment.
