2/22/2010 - SOUTHWEST ASIA -- Coalition airpower integrated with ground forces in Iraq and the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan in the following operations February 19 according to Combined Air and Space Operations Center officials here.

Air Operations in Afghanistan:

Close Air Support

Lashkar Gah, Regional Command-South
U.S. Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt II pilots provided close air support for friendly forces. Pilots observed IED emplacers attempting to plant explosives and requested permission to eliminate the threat to friendly forces. Pilots eliminated the threat via strafing runs of cannon fire.

U.S. Air Force MQ-9A Reaper operators provided armed overwatch and reconnaissance for friendly ground forces. When ground troops reported taking enemy small arms fire, operators fired a missile, terminating the enemy fire. Later, operators eliminated a sniper firing at friendly forces using a missile against the enemy sniper's fighting position.

U.S. Air Force MQ-9A Reaper operators provided armed overwatch and reconnaissance for friendly ground forces. The operators observed enemy personnel modifying compound walls to observe and fire on on friendly forces in the area. Operators employed a missile on the enemy position, eliminating the threat to friendly forces.

Gereshk, RC-S
U.S. Air Force A-10 pilots provided close air support for friendly forces. The pilots conducted shows of force to deter enemy fire on friendly forces. The pilots worked in tandem and the enemy fire ceased briefly. When the enemy fire started again, the pilots fired a warning barrage of cannon fire and the enemy fire ceased.

U.S. Air Force A-10 pilots provided close air support for friendly forces. The pilots conducted a show of force over a known enemy position. The show of force was deemed successful as the ground commander's intentions were met.

Sangin, RC-S
Coalition pilots provided armed overwatch and reconnaissance for friendly ground forces. Pilots conducted a show of force when enemy forces were observed firing on friendly forces from two locations. The show of force, with flares launched, was successful in terminating enemy fire.

U.S. Air Force F-16C pilots provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. Pilots conducted shows of force, with flares, to deter any potential enemy action in the area. The show of force was declared successful as desired effects were achieved.

Musa Qaleh, RC-S
U.S. Air Force A-10 pilots provided close air support for friendly forces and a helicopter extraction operation. The pilots conducted a show of force to deter enemy fire on friendly forces. When enemy fire erupted against friendly helicopters and the pilots strafed the enemy position using cannon fire, bringing the enemy fire to a halt. No further enemy action was noted.

Asadabad, RC-E
U.S. Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle aircrews provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. The aircrews conducted shows of force to deter enemy action and break hostile contact between enemy and friendly forces. The shows of force were declared successful.

Airlift Action

Paktika Province, RC-E
A U.S. Air Force C-17 Globemaster III aircrew flew a combat-resupply mission in Paktika Province, Afghanistan, airdropping approximately 70,000 pounds of supplies to friendly forces.

Konar Province, RC-E
A U.S. Air Force C-130 Hercules aircrew flew a combat-resupply mission in Konar Province, Afghanistan, airdropping approximately 30,000 pounds of supplies to friendly forces.

Oruzgan Province, RC-S
A U.S. Air Force C-130 Hercules aircrew flew a combat-resupply mission in Oruzgan Province, Afghanistan, airdropping combat-sustainment supplies to friendly forces. The aircrew dropped approximately 34,000 pounds of supplies.

Zabul Province, RC-S
A U.S. Air Force C-130 Hercules aircrew flew a combat-airdrop mission in Zabul Province, Afghanistan, delivering approximately 35,000 pounds of supplies to friendly forces.

Oruzgan Province, RC-S
A U.S. Air Force C-130 Hercules aircrew flew a combat-resupply mission in Oruzgan Province, Afghanistan, airdropping combat-sustainment supplies to friendly forces. The aircrew dropped approximately 35,000 pounds of supplies.
