PANAMA CITY, Fla. (NNS) -- Naval Surface Warfare Center Panama City hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony Feb. 18 for the command's new Littoral Warfare Systems Facility (LWSF).
The 42,500 square foot building and its occupants will support the Littoral Combat Ship (LCS), as well as the development, integration and certification of the LCS Mission Packages.
"The first major acquisition program utilizing this one-of-a-kind facility will be the Navy's newest surface combatant, the littoral combat ship," said Capt. Thomas Brovarone, commander, NSWC Panama City. "The LWSF has features which allow both in-service equipment and emerging technologies to be operated together in a laboratory environment."
The building has three specialized laboratories for littoral warfare systems integration, modularization, as well as a secure computing environment for software development, testing, integration and certification. The facility also features a drive-through high bay and crane capabilities to lay down, configure, load and offload multiple mission modules.
"Ultimately, the facility will be linked to other land-based facilities around the country to conduct platform interoperability testing as if it was a deployed platform at sea," said Brovarone.
