SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- The principal deputy under secretary of defense (Comptroller) and other distinguished guests helped break ground Feb. 17 on a new Child Development Center (CDC) in the Lincoln Military Housing community at Naval Base Point Loma in San Diego, Calif.
Michael McCord said the DoD has designated more than $160 million in Recovery Act funding for San Diego military facilities like the Point Loma CDC.
The $8.35 million project will be funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act signed into law by President Barack Obama in 2009.
"This project is a huge win for the Navy," said Naval Base Point Loma Commanding Officer Capt. Paul Marconi. "If you want to compete in today's labor market, you have to provide affordable and quality child care. It's also a huge win for San Diego. The workforce doing the lion's share of the work is local."
The center will provide care for 218 children of active-duty service members serving in the San Diego area and provide around 60 new jobs.
"The NTC (Naval Training Center) Point Loma CDC is among eight new CDC projects opening over the next two years in metro San Diego," said Cyndy Padilla, Family and Child Programs operations manager. "These eight centers will provide full-time care for children six weeks to five years of age."
The project was awarded Sept. 30, 2009, to T.B. Penick and Sons Inc. The 25,866-square foot, single-story center is scheduled to be completed January 2011.
