Regional coop is key to achieving peace in Afghanistan: Karzai

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Berlin, Feb 7, IRNA -- Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Sunday said regional cooperation was crucial for establishing peace and security in his war-stricken country.

Addressing the 46th Munich Security Conference, Karzai said that regional cooperation was the "crux of the matter" for Afghan reconciliation, an effective war on terrorism and peace and stability in the region.

"Peace cannot be easily achieved (in Afghanistan) without regional cooperation," he added.

Karzai pointed out that Saudi Arabia and Pakistan played a "very important" role in promoting the fragile Taliban reconciliation and reintegration process.

He outlined details of his reconciliation plans with the Taliban, including establishing a "national council for reconciliation, peace and reintegration" and conducting a peace jirga by the middle of spring.

Karzai welcomed international support for his reconciliation efforts with the Taliban.
