MAYPORT, Fla. (NNS) -- Rear Adm. Vic Guillory, Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command and U.S. Fourth Fleet, visited USNS Lewis and Clark (T-AKE 1) Feb. 1 prior to its departure to join Operation Unified Response.
Guillory took time to thank the Lewis and Clark crew, comprised of military and civilian mariners, for their contribution to the relief operations.
"This is a very important mission. The supplies you are carrying will save lives," said Guillory. "The Navy is uniquely equipped to respond to disasters like this earthquake in Haiti. The capabilities of ships like the Lewis and Clark are perfectly suited to fill the needs of a humanitarian assistance and disaster relief mission like Operation Unified Response."
Lewis and Clark was in Mayport to onload more than 1,100 pallets of food, water and supplies it will be delivering to people affected by a 7.0 magnitude earthquake in Haiti Jan. 12. Lewis and Clark onloaded the pallets Jan. 30 through the coordination of Fleet Industrial Supply Corps (FISC) Mayport and the Navy Food Management Team.
Lewis and Clark is conducting humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations for Operation Unified Response under control of U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command and U.S. Fourth Fleet (NAVSO/C4F). NAVSO/C4F is directing all Naval assets and personnel in support of Joint Task Force Haiti, the joint command element directing U.S. military capabilities support to USAID and the U.N. Stabilization Mission in Haiti.
