2/2/2010 - SOUTHWEST ASIA -- Coalition airpower integrated with ground forces in Iraq and the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan in the following operations January 30, according to Combined Air and Space Operations Center officials here.
Air Operations in Afghanistan:
Qal-E-Naw Regional Command-West
Coalition pilots provided armed overwatch for friendly ground forces. Pilots released a precision-guided munition on a confirmed enemy firing position when ground forces reported taking enemy fire. The action was successful and enemy fire ceased.
Surkhabad RC-S
U.S. Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt II pilots provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. The pilots received coordinates for an enemy position that was engaging friendly forces with heavy machine gun fire and marked the target with rockets. The pilots made numerous cannon-fire strafing runs on the enemy position, destroying the position and causing secondary explosions as the enemy ammunition was detonated. The enemy fire ceased with the destruction of the target position.
Konduz RC-N
A U.S Air Force B-1B Lancer aircrew flew armed overwatch for friendly forces. After refueling, the aircrew conducted several shows of force to deter enemy fire and allow friendly forces to return to base. The shows of force were successful as the evacuation was successful and no further enemy fire was noted. They later provided escort to a friendly forces convoy and returned to base.
Chahar Bagh RC-S
A-10 pilots provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. The friendly forces reported taking enemy small arms fire and requested close air support. The point of origin for the enemy fire was confirmed and pilots conducted cannon-fire strafing runs successfully stopping enemy aggression.
Later, Navy F/A-18C Hornet pilots provided armed overwatch and reconnaissance for friendly forces. The friendly forces reported enemy small-arms fire and requested shows of force to deter the enemy aggression. The pilots conducted shows of force over the enemy firing position, with flares, which successfully stopped enemy action.
Asadabad RC-E
U.S. Air Force F15E Strike Eagle aircrews provided armed overwatch for Coalition forces. The aircrews responded to a Coalition forces report of enemy fire by releasing a precision-guided munition on target coordinates. The enemy fire ceased when the enemy position was destroyed.
Bagram RC-E
U.S. Air Force F15E Strike Eagle aircrews provided armed overwatch for a Coalition forces patrol. The aircrews conducted a show of force to deter reported enemy aggression along the patrol route. The show of force was successful as no further enemy action was noted.
