SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- After an extensive two-year renovation, the Naval Base San Diego Waterfront Recreation Center opened Jan. 28.
Formerly Club Metro, during a 2006 data call and survey conducted by Deployed Forces and the Morale, Welfare and Recreation Marketing Department, Sailors expressed their desire for a recreation center. Sailors expressed that the venue, located near pier two and close to the waterfront, represented the perfect location for the types of activities they wanted.
The newly updated 21,320-square-foot facility is equipped with a dining area offering a full-service menu, five full-size pool tables, electronic gaming including 15 Xbox systems, 13 Playstation 3 systems and two Wii consoles and 25 Internet-ready computers.
"This place is great," said Navy Region Southwest Harbor Boat Watch Commander Master-at-Arms 1st Class (SW/EXW) Gilbert Silvabecerra. "It was money well spent, and looks really good."
According to Silvabecerra, the center will be appreciated by patrons.
The facility also offers a movie room with more than 300 titles.
The Waterfront Recreation Center boasts two conference rooms as well as a newly expanded Information Tickets and Tours office.
When planning the center, the front and back entrances were designed with sitting areas and two pool tables, taking full advantage of the San Diego weather.
The new center came as a surprise to one patron. Former Sailor Emile Martin likes the center and visits a couple of times throughout the week.
"I learned about the center through some friends of mine," said Martin. "I like this center more than any other center that I have ever visited."
The Waterfront Recreation Center is scheduled for operation Monday - Friday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., and all Armed Forces Identification Card holders with access to the base are welcome. Children under the age of 18, however, must be accompanied by their sponsor at all times.
Future plans for the Waterfront Recreation Center include construction of a Starbucks.
