PORT HUENEME, Calif. (NNS) -- Five mobile power plants and six technicians from the Mobile Utility Support Equipment (MUSE) division of Naval Facilities Expeditionary Logistics Center will depart today for Naval Station Guantanamo Bay in support of Operation Unified Response.
The equipment, totaling 7.3 mega-watts of power, will support NAVFAC Southeast's efforts to provide logistics support for Operation Unified Response.
"We were able to deploy these assets in a short period of time because of MUSE's ongoing shore power renovation project using fully integrated power plants," said Construction Electrician 1st Class Juan Aragon, who is in charge of the MUSE project in Naval Station Guantanamo Bay.
At 68,000 pounds, the integrated power plant is 75 percent lighter than older generator sets and can be shipped inside a standard 40 foot by eight foot International Organization for Standardization (ISO) container requiring no special rigging equipment.
"We can now respond to utility shortages and emergencies faster and be more efficient when we get there," said Aragon. "This can be critical in a situation where you are supporting a relief effort like Haiti."
The MUSE serves the Department of the Navy and Department of Defense providing power generation, transformation, and steam generating equipment to support worldwide Navy and Department of Defense utility shortfalls and emergencies.
