IAI Unveils Naval Self-Protection System at Singapore Airshow
Jan 27, 2010
Israel Aerospace Industries' (IAI) ELTA Systems Ltd., a group and wholly owned subsidiary of IAI, unveiled its Nav-Guard EL/M-2222S, a naval self-protection system, at this year's Singapore Airshow. The system protects patrol boats and other vessels patrolling in littoral waters along potentially hostile shorelines from such threats as coastal weapon systems and, more recently, anti-tank rockets and missiles. The Nav-Guard can detect, classify, and verify a potential threat to the boat and react accordingly by initiating an alert to the crew and dispensing smoke, chaff, and flares according to a preprogrammed procedure.
The Nav-Guard is the maritime version of IAI's Flight Guard System, which protects aircraft from heat-seeking missiles by deploying flares as decoys.
The system includes a radar-based Missile Approach Warning System (MAWS) and various reaction systems, such as smoke dispensers and chaff and flare dispensers. Additional subsystems can also be integrated into the system, including a radar warning receiver, a laser warning receiver, a day/night electro-optical system, an infra-red search/track, RF jammer/counter measures, and an infra-red jammer/counter measures.
The prototype for the Nav-Guard is now in development.
