IAI Presents New Portable SATCOM Terminal at Singapore Airshow
Jan 27, 2010
Israel Aerospace Industries' (IAI) ELTA Systems Ltd., a group and wholly owned subsidiary of IAI, exhibited its new Man Portable Satellite Communication Terminal (MAPSAT) at this year's Singapore Airshow. The MAPSAT, which also goes by the name EL/K-1895, is a lightweight tactical satellite communication (SATCOM) terminal that can be carried and operated by a single soldier.
"One challenge that the Israel Defense Forces have faced in recent wars has been in the realm of communication – the technologies they used didn't provide a clear connection," explained Nissim Hadas, president of ELTA. "The MAPSAT was developed as an outcome of the tactical difficulties raised in previous conflicts. The MAPSAT provides the operator with the ability to communicate with all network subscribers within the satellite footprint, including over-the-horizon capabilities, utilizing a communication link, voice, data, and compressed video."
The EL/K-1895 employs a fast SATCOM link deployment, and allows for setup and operation without revealing the unit's location, through a tripod mounted, ruggedized self-contained communication terminal.
The system is preprogrammed before the mission to detect and direct itself to available Ku band Geo Communication Satellites. In addition, the terminal can be operated locally or remotely, using a laptop computer or a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA), and has a range of up to thousands of kilometers.
