IAI Awarded $60 Million Contract for Compact Transportable Artillery Weapon Location Radar
Jan 27, 2010
Israel Aerospace Industries' (IAI) ELTA Systems Ltd., a group and wholly owned subsidiary of IAI, has been awarded a contract worth $60 million by an Asian country to develop and manufacture a compact weapon location radar. The ELTA-made C-Band radar employs active electronically steering array technology and performs artillery weapon location and air defense missions.
Nissim Hadas, Corporate VP of IAI and President of ELTA, explains: "The customer needed compact weapon location radar that could be installed on a high mobility vehicle capable of handling rough terrain. In addition, the radar had to be able to detect a wide range of flying objects - including artillery shells and rockets - as well as adversary weapon launching points, and to quickly calculate anticipated impact points. After a number of evaluations and tests, the customer chose the ELTA-made C-band radar, which best met their technical and operational expectations."
ELTA designs and produces a family of multi-mission radars (MMRs), of which the compact transportable artillery weapon location radar is one. The MMRs are scalable, meaning they can be tailored to fit customer requirements, and are applicable to both air defense and artillery weapon location requirements.
