Coalition Forces in Afghanistan Protected by IAI's Persistent Surveillance Radars
Jan 27, 2010
Israel Aerospace Industries' (IAI) ELTA Systems Ltd., a group and wholly owned subsidiary of IAI, is providing its EL/M-2112 multi-mission radar to a European country to provide early warning to coalition forces in Afghanistan against enemy attacks. IAI was awarded a contract worth $7.5 million for providing the radars.
The EL/M-2112 features innovative advanced outstanding capabilities, including the ability to detect and track targets simultaneously, both on the ground and at sea. The radar, which is operational under all weather conditions, immediately detects, monitors, and tracks all ground moving targets and all sea targets (moving and stationary) in the region of interest. Targets may include walking persons, moving vehicles, and various vessels and boats at sea.
The EL/M-2112 version in use in Afghanistan has a detection range of 5,000m for rubber boats and moving persons, and 10,000m for small sailing boats and moving vehicles. The radar is embedded in an advanced surveillance system.
The radar features two stationary planar array antennas, each covering a sector of 90 degrees, thus achieving 180 degrees of simultaneous coverage. Full 360 degree coverage can be achieved either by adding more antennas or by placing the radar on a positioner.
