1/20/2010 - SOUTHWEST ASIA -- Coalition airpower integrated with ground forces in Iraq and the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan in the following operations January 18, according to Combined Air and Space Operations Center officials here.
Air Operations in Afghanistan:
Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle aircraft provided reconnaissance and surveillance for friendly forces. The aircrews were instructed to release a precision-guided munition in an uninhabited area as a warning to insurgents to cease operations. The tactic was a success as enemy action ceased.
Coalition aircrews were tasked to deliver a pre-emptive strike against confirmed coordinates. The crews released precision-guided munitions and then left the area.
Coalition aircrews provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. Ground control tasked the aircrews to conduct shows of force over an enemy position indiscriminately firing on the friendly forces. The shows of force were considered successful.
Pilots flying Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt II aircraft provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. The pilots conducted a show of force, with flares expended, over an area of enemy small-arms fire to deter further enemy activity. The show of force was declared successful when no further enemy fire was noted.
Marine AV-8B harrier pilots provided reconnaissance and close air support for friendly forces. When friendly forces reported taking enemy fire, a show of force, with flares expended, was successfully conducted and enemy fire ceased.
Navy F/A-18E Super Hornet aircrews provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. The aircrews were tasked with the destruction and elimination of an enemy compound and an anti-Coalition forces fighting position. They released precision-guided munitions on the target coordinates successfully neutralized the targets.
Coalition aircraft replaced the departing Navy aircraft and were immediately tasked to target another enemy compound where enemy forces were firing at friendly ground forces. The pilots fired a rocket and destroyed the enemy compound, successfully terminating the enemy fire. Later, while still in the area, pilots conducted a show of force when enemy fire from another compound was directed at friendly forces. The show of force was successful at ending the enemy fire.
Air Force A-10 pilots provided armed overwatch for a friendly-forces convoy. The pilots conducted a show of force and launched flares to deter enemy action in the area. The show of force was declared successful and the pilots resumed convoy-escort duties.
Navy F/A-18F Super Hornet aircrews provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. The aircrews conducted a show of force over the area to deter enemy small arms fire. The show of force, with flares expended, was declared successful when no enemy fire was noted in the area.
