Rich Nations Moving Fast on Haiti Debt Relief
VOA News 19 January 2010
A group of countries that have made loans to other nations has called on its members to speed up the process of canceling debts owed by Haiti.
The Paris Club Tuesday urged its members to finish a process that began last year, out of consideration for "the financing needs Haiti will face reconstructing the country."
Members of the informal group of rich nations agreed last July to cancel all of the $214 million owed by Haiti.
Haiti owes money to the United States, Britain, France, Germany and Spain, among other countries.
The Paris Club also urged countries that do not belong to the group to cancel debt owed to them by Haiti.
One of those countries, Taiwan, said Tuesday it would consider doing so.
