1/15/2010 - SOUTHWEST ASIA -- Coalition airpower integrated with ground forces in Iraq and the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan in the following operations January 14, according to Combined Air and Space Operations Center officials here.

Air Operations in Afghanistan:

Shurikian
An Air Force MQ-9A Reaper operators provided armed overwatch and reconnaissance for friendly ground forces. The pilot observed suspicious activity in the vicinity of friendly forces and requested confirmation of position coordinates. Ground forces confirmed the coordinates and identified the personnel as an enemy spotter. After receiving permission to eliminate the threat to friendly forces, the operators engaged using a missile. The target was successfully eliminated.

Chahar Bagh
Navy F/A-18C Hornet pilots provided armed overwatch for friendly ground forces. The pilots conducted a show of force over a known enemy firing point to deter any potential enemy action. The show of force was deemed successful as no enemy action was noted.

Air Force B-1B aircraft provided armed overwatch for a friendly forces dismounted patrol. The patrol was withdrawing from the area when it discerned a threat of an enemy attack. The B-1B aircrew conducted a show of force to allow the patrol to successfully withdraw from the area. The show of force was considered successful when the patrol exited the area without receiving any enemy fire.

Coalition aircraft provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. The pilots conducted a show of force. The show of force was considered a success.

Asmar
Pilots flying Air Force F-16C Fighting Falcon aircraft provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. The local population had received threats of an imminent attack and the pilots conducted a show of force to reassure the local populace they were overhead for support. The show of force was declared successful as no attack occurred.

Qalat
Air Force F-16C pilots provided armed overwatch for friendly forces after a convoy had been hit with an improvised explosive device. When unidentified personnel were observed in the vicinity of the stalled convoy, a show of force was conducted to deter any possible enemy action. The show of force was declared successful as no attack occurred.

Kandahar
Air Force pilots flying F-16C aircraft provided armed overwatch for friendly forces at a downed Predator site. When ground forces reported suspicious personnel in the vicinity of the crash site, a show of force, utilizing flares, was conducted to deter any potential conflict with friendly forces. The show of force was successful in deterring any action as suspicious personnel left the area.

Air Operations in Iraq:

Baghdad
Air Force pilots flying F-16C aircraft provided armed overwatch, reconnaissance and surveillance over the city. Shows of force were conducted to deter and prevent vehicle-born improvised explosive device attacks. The shows of force were successful in deterring enemy action in the area.
