1/15/2010 - SOUTHWEST ASIA -- Coalition airpower integrated with ground forces in Iraq and the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan in the following operations January 12, according to Combined Air and Space Operations Center officials here.
Air Operations in Afghanistan:
Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt II pilots provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. Friendly forces reported a large crowd forming during talks with village elders about the alleged destruction of a KORAN. The A-10 pilots conducted shows of force, with flares, over the crowd, which was acting hostile toward friendly forces. A second meeting with the elders and a third show of force with flares were successful in dispersing the crowd without incident.
Marine AV-8B Harrier aircraft provided armed overwatch for friendly forces faced with a large crowd near their positions. The pilots conducted a show of force to reassure friendly forces in the area and the crowd that air support was overhead. The crowd was reported as non-hostile in temperament and did not react to the show of force.
Pilots flying Navy F/A-18 C Hornet aircraft provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. When the aircraft arrived on station, the pilots conducted a show of force. The show of force was declared successful.
Air Force aircrews flying F15E Strike Eagle aircraft provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. When ground forces reported people conducting unusual activity inside a tree line, a show of force was requested to help determine if they were insurgents. The show of force was successful in determining they were not insurgents.
Navy F/A-18F Super Hornet aircrews provided armed overwatch and reconnaissance of known anti-Coalition forces firing positions for friendly ground forces. The aircrews conducted a pre-emptive show of force over the known enemy firing points to deter any potential enemy action. The show of force was deemed successful as no enemy action was noted.
Air Force B-1B aircraft provided armed overwatch for friendly forces and reconnaissance for enemy forces planting improvised-explosive devices. The aircrew conducted a show of force to aid in a friendly ground forces withdrawal from the area due to enemy small arms fire. The show of force was considered successful as the enemy fire ceased.
