Navy Improves Wharf Capabilities on Diego Garcia

YOKOSUKA, Japan (NNS) -- Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Far East awarded a $9.1 million, firm-fixed price contract Jan. 13 to Black Construction Corp./MACE International Joint Venture, GMF of Barrigada, Guam for wharf utilities upgrades at Naval Support Facility Diego Garcia, British Indian Ocean Territory.
"The award and eventual completion of this project will provide critical infrastructure upgrades to the deep draft wharf required to support the USS Emory S. Land (AS 39) as she makes her homeport change to Diego Garcia later this year," said Diego Garcia's Public Works Officer, Cmdr. Joe Simpkins.
"And with the addition of a steam production plant, the project will also add an important commodity to Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Far East's utility service provider capability."
The exact contract award amount is $9,137,800. Work is expected to be completed by October 2011.
This contract was competitively procured via the Navy Electronic Commerce Online Web site with two proposals received.
