GAZA, January 6 (RIA Novosti) - At least one Palestinian militant was killed and four others were wounded in an Israeli airstrike on the central Gaza Strip, as the death toll in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict starts its count in 2010.

The gunmen were allegedly preparing to launch a rocket attack against Israel when an Israeli aircraft fired a missile at them.

Palestinian sources claim they were members of the Nasr Salah al-Din Brigades, the armed wing of the Popular Resistance Committees, a terrorist group operating out of Gaza.

The killed militant was reportedly the first fatality of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in 2010.

Israel has pledged to retaliate against any attacks from Gaza. According to the Israeli army, some 800 rockets and mortars launched by Palestinians have landed in Israel's southern territories in 2009 and the attacks continued this year.

The Gaza Strip has been the subject of an almost continuous Israeli blockade since radical Islamic group Hamas took control of the enclave in the summer of 2007, ousting President Abbas's Fatah movement in a bloody five-day war.

The Popular Resistance Committees (PRC) is a coalition of various armed Palestinian factions that oppose the conciliatory approach adopted by the Palestinian Authority and Fatah towards Israel.
