1/4/2010 - SOUTHWEST ASIA -- Coalition airpower integrated with ground forces in Iraq and the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan in the following operations January 01, according to Combined Air and Space Operations Center officials here.

Air Operations in Afghanistan:

Asmar
Air Force B-1B Lancer aircraft provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. When an enemy fighting position was observed near friendly forces, a request for air support was made. Once coordinates for the enemy position were received, the aircraft released a precision-guided munition against the target and eliminated the potential threat to friendly forces. No further enemy action was noted.

Chahar Bagh
Air Force MQ-9A Reaper aircraft provided armed overwatch and force protection for friendly forces. The Predator observed enemy forces acting suspiciously, then fire weapons toward friendly forces. A missile was released against the enemy fighting position and the threat to friendly forces was eliminated.

Navy F/A-18E Super Hornet aircraft provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. Once on station, the aircraft was instructed to conduct a show of force. The show of force was deemed successful.

Later, more F/A-18E aircraft provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. Coalition forces reported taking enemy small arms fire and requested a show of force to deter enemy aggression. The show of force was successful and enemy fire ceased.

Once again, F/A-18E aircraft provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. When they were on station, the aircraft were instructed to conduct a show of force. The show of force was deemed successful.

Ali Kheyl
Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle aircraft provided armed overwatch and surveillance for friendly forces. The aircraft observed and confirmed the movement of several small groups of suspicious personnel in the vicinity of Coalition forces, who requested a show of force to deter any potential enemy action. The shows of force were considered successful when no enemy action was noted and the groups dispersed.

Balocan
Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt II aircraft provided armed overwatch and surveillance for friendly forces. The pilot observed enemy personnel emplacing an improvised explosive device and requested permission to eliminate the threat to friendly forces. The pilot made several strafing runs with cannon fire and eliminated the threat to friendly forces.

Gardez
Air Force F-16C Fighting Falcon aircraft provided armed overwatch for friendly forces and a convoy. Pilots conducted a show of force pass to stifle any enemy action. The show of force was successful as no enemy action was noted. Later, the same aircraft provided escort to a friendly convoy, which arrived safely at its destination.

Morghab
Coalition aircraft provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. The aircraft was instructed to conduct a show of force over a suspicious area. The show of force succeeded as no enemy action was noted.

Air Operations in Iraq:

Baghdad
Air Force F-16C aircraft provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. When pilots arrived on station, they conducted a show of force over a known enemy position to deter potential enemy action. The show of force was deemed successful when no enemy action was reported.
