Munich security confab to dwell on world powers' atomic disarmament
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Berlin, Jan 2, IRNA -- Next month's Munich Security Conference is to focus on likely concrete steps for the nuclear disarmament of world powers, the head of the confab, Wolfgang Ischinger told a press conference in Berlin on Saturday.
Ischinger urged diplomats of other nuclear-armed countries to discuss ways of joining the US-Russian atomic disarmament initiative when they meet in Munich from February 6 through 8.
He stressed the vision of a nuclear weapons-free world should be "more than only hot air."
Other major political issues at the Munich meeting include Afghanistan, energy security and European security architecture, according to Ischinger.
The high-profile security conference which is widely viewed as the top annual gathering of political movers and shakers on global strategic issues, is being sponsored by the German government.
The Munich security meeting has also been the scene of violent anti-US protests by mainly radical leftist, anarchist, student and labor groups in recent years.
