1/1/2010 - SOUTHWEST ASIA -- Coalition airpower integrated with ground forces in Iraq and the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan in the following operations December 31, according to Combined Air and Space Operations Center officials here.

Air Operations in Afghanistan:

Asmar
Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle aircraft provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. When enemy personnel were observed approaching friendly forces, a request for air support was made. Once coordinates for the enemy position were received, the aircraft released a precision-guided munition on the target and eliminated the potential threat to friendly forces. No further enemy action was noted.

Chahar Bagh
Air Force MQ-9A Reaper aircraft provided armed overwatch and force protection for a friendly-forces foot patrol. The Predator observed enemy forces fire on the patrol and released a missile against the enemy fighting position and destroyed it. Later, friendly forces reported taking more enemy fire and another missile was fired on the new enemy fighting position. The threat to friendly forces was eliminated.

Coalition aircraft provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. Once on station, the aircraft was instructed to conduct a show of force. The show of force was deemed successful.

Air Force F-16C aircraft provided armed overwatch and surveillance for friendly forces. A van was observed blocking traffic on a major road and a show of force was requested to deter any potential enemy activity. The show of force was considered successful when the van proceeded to continue down the road. Later, another show of force was conducted to deter potential enemy activity in another area of the city. The show of force was successful as no enemy activity was noted.

Musa Qala
Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt II aircraft provided armed overwatch and surveillance for a friendly-forces patrol. The convoy reported taking accurate enemy fire and requested close air support. The aircraft observed and confirmed the location of the enemy fighting position and requested permission to engage enemy forces. Several strafing runs using cannon rounds were made that eliminated the threat to the friendly-forces patrol. Later, when the patrol attempted to do battle damage assessment, enemy fire started again, several shows of force were conducted but did not deter the enemy fire. More cannon-fire strafing runs were made and the enemy fire ceased, allowing the BDA to be completed.

Asadabad
F-15E aircraft provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. When friendly forces reported suspicious enemy activity, a show of force was requested to deter any enemy aggression. The show of force was deemed successful when no enemy action occurred.

Ghazni
Air Force B-1B Lancer aircraft provided armed overwatch for a friendly forces convoy. The convoy reported taking enemy fire and requested air support and medevac assistance. A show of force was conducted during the medevac operation to stifle any enemy action. The show of force was successful as no enemy action was noted and the convoy continued to its destination.

Abchakan
F-16C aircraft provided armed overwatch and reconnaissance for friendly forces. The aircraft was instructed to conduct a show of force over a suspicious area. The show of force succeeded as no enemy action was noted.

Air Operations in Iraq:

Baghdad
Air Force F-16C aircraft provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. The friendly forces reported receiving enemy fire and requested shows of force be conducted to deter the enemy fire. The shows of force, with flares expended, were deemed successful when no further enemy action was reported.

Air Force F-16C aircraft provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. The friendly forces reported receiving enemy fire and requested a show of force be conducted to deter the enemy fire. The show of force, over a historical enemy fighting position, was deemed successful when no further enemy action was reported.

In a third show of force, Air Force F-16C aircraft provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. The friendly forces reported receiving enemy fire and requested shows of force be conducted to deter the enemy fire. The shows of force, flown over a historical enemy fighting position, were deemed successful when no further enemy action was reported.
