WASHINGTON (NNS) -- The chief of naval operations (CNO) recorded a podcast Dec. 22 to discuss the newly implemented Afghanistan/Pakistan Hands (AFPAK) program.
"The intent of the Afghanistan-Pakistan Hands Program, or AFPAK program, is really to provide more continuity to be able to allow us to focus on the mission in Afghanistan and to ensure that we have individuals who understand the country, who understand the people and who understand the unique nature of the fight that we have there," said CNO Adm. Gary Roughead.
CNO expressed the importance of a sustained presence in the region to help better understand the languages and cultures, building stronger relationships with the countries.
During the podcast, Roughead also spoke about his most recent cycling experience in Florida, riding his bike alongside injured active-duty service members and veterans on the Ride 2 Recovery bike challenge.
"It was just good to be out there with them to see that motivation, to see that inspiration and I was also grateful for all of the support of the different organizations that were there," said Roughead.
