USS NIMITZ, At Sea (NNS) -- Command of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 86 changed hands during a change of command ceremony aboard aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN 68) Dec. 18.
Cmdr. Max McCoy relieved Cmdr. Paul Spedero as commanding officer.
The ceremony in the forecastle capped a successful tour for Spedero and change of leadership for the VFA-86 Sidewinders as they continue to support U.S. and Coalition ground forces during Operation Enduring Freedom.
Capt. Bret Batchelder, commander Carrier Air Wing (CVW)11, commended Spedero for his leadership and guidance.
"The two greatest attributes that a commanding officer could have are character and integrity," said Batchelder. "You are an individual that has more than anyone else I've ever met. I appreciate your leadership. You put your warrior spirit into everything you do."
McCoy, who served with Spedero as the squadron's executive officer, highlighted the example of leadership Spedero set as the standard throughout his time as commanding officer of VFA-86.
"Speedy [Spedero], I wish you the best as you continue to excel in your career," said McCoy. "There is no other more compassionate and genuine officer in the Navy. I can think of no better officer to tackle the challenges of tomorrows Navy and lead Sailors from the bridge of an aircraft carrier."
Spedero was selected by Navy Personnel Command to begin the Aviation Nuclear Officer Pipeline program. He will begin with Nuclear Power School training in Charleston, South Carolina and continue a 10-year path to becoming commanding officer of an aircraft carrier.
"I'm faced with mixed emotions," said Spedero. "I'm disappointed that I'll be unable to finish this mission, but I'm excited for the future of my squadron."
