NATO chief set to leave Moscow after plane trouble
12:20 18/12/2009 MOSCOW, December 18 (RIA Novosti) - NATO's secretary general is set to leave Moscow for Brussels, after being delayed overnight due to technical problems with his plane.
Anders Fogh Rasmussen spent two days in the Russian capital for talks focusing on Russian assistance to NATO-led operations in Afghanistan.
During a meeting with President Dmitry Medvedev, he also discussed Russia-NATO cooperation in counter-terrorism, measures against drug trafficking, and rescue efforts following natural and industrial disasters.
However, he opposed Medvedev's call for a new pan-European security treaty.
"I don't see a need for new treaties or new legally binding documents because we do have a framework already," he later told reporters.
"We have already a lot of documents, so my point of departure is: 'I don't see a need for new treaties.' But let me reiterate, we are of course prepared to discuss the ideas in the right forum."
Medvedev put forward the initiative to work out a treaty on European security in June 2008, proposing that the principle of indivisible security be legally sealed in international law, preventing any state or organization from strengthening their security at the expense of others.
