U.S. drone kills four militants in Pakistan
NEW DELHI, December 10 (RIA Novosti) - At least four people were killed in Pakistan's troubled tribal belt in an airstrike on a suspected militant base by a U.S. drone, Pakistan's Geo TV said on Thursday citing local authorities.
Eight people were injured in the drone attack, which took place in the South Waziristan region in northwestern Pakistan.
No other details are available.
North and South Waziristan, which both border Afghanistan, are believed to be the stronghold of fiercely independent Pashtun tribes. The area is believed to be a safe haven for hundreds of Taliban fighters from Afghanistan.
As of December 9, a total of 589 suspected militants have been killed during a major ground assault by the Pakistani armed forces on the South Waziristan tribal area. At least 79 security forces personnel were also killed.
