PEARL HARBOR (NNS) -- The Gold Crew of USS Michigan (SSN 727) held a change of command ceremony at the Parche Sumbarine Memorial Park on board Naval Station Pearl Harbor Nov. 17.
Capt. Philip G. McLaughlin relieved Capt. Charles J. Doty as commanding officer of Michigan's Gold Crew.
"I am thankful for the opportunity to have commanded an amazing warship in this theater that is so vital to our national security," said Doty. "Most of all, the ability of USS Michigan to support the continuum of the defense of our country is due to the effort of the officers and the men who served this ship – past, present and future."
Doty was awarded the Legion of Merit (gold star in lieu of third award) for his exceptional performance as commanding officer from August 2007 to November 2009.
"I look forward to witnessing the success of the ship and crew under the leadership of Capt. McLaughlin and the COs (commanding officers) that will follow him," said Doty.
McLaughlin acknowledged the quality of the crew and vessel he was inheriting.
"I am awed by your [the crew] enthusiasm and professionalism, and I pledge that I will work every day to be worthy of you, and I look forward to the challenges of the future," said McLaughlin.
In 2004, Michigan (then SSBN 727) commenced an engineered refueling overhaul procedure followed by a conversion to a nuclear-powered guided-missile submarine (SSGN). Michigan is one of four ballistic missile submarines of the Ohio class converted to guided missile status.
