USS PORTER, At Sea (NNS) -- USS Porter (DDG 78) held a change of command ceremony aboard the guided-missile destroyer Dec. 2.

Cmdr. David T. Peterson relieved Cmdr. Michael S. Feyedelem as commanding officer.

"Today is a day of celebration and the opening of a new chapter for Porter, but it's with heavy heart that I stand before you today," said Feyedelem about his 18 month tour as commanding oficer. "I have been dreading this speech since before I even took command. This tour has been everything I could have ever dreamed of and thus it is hard to acknowledge that in a few moments it will be over."

The ceremony marked the culmination of Feyedelem's first at-sea command, one in which he led the crew through numerous successful certifications, inspections, underway periods and half of a deployment. Feyedelem will next report to USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) to serve as the reactor officer.

"My goal is a seamless transition into command," said Peterson. "You have been and will continue to be successful and it is my job to help facilitate and continue that success."

Porter is Peterson's third command. His first command was as the commanding officer on MCM Crew Bulwark. Peterson's second command was as the commanding officer for the Provincial Reconstruction Team in Sharana, Afghanistan.

Porter is deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet Area of Operations in support of maritime security operations.
