PEARL HARBOR (NNS) -- The crew of USS Columbus (SSN 762) was presented the U.S. Pacific Fleet 2008 Arleigh Burke Award Nov. 17 in Pearl Harbor.
Adm. Patrick Walsh, commander, U.S. Pacific Fleet, presented the award to Columbus' Sailor of the Year, Chief Machinist's Mate (SS) Jason Jacobs, and Junior Sailor of the Quarter, Electrician's Mate (SS) Cole Parks on behalf of the crew during an award ceremony held at the Pearl Harbor Naval Station submarine pier.
The Arleigh Burke Fleet Trophy Award, named after one of the U.S. Navy's most famous destroyer squadron commanders and the chief of naval operations from 1955 to 1961, is presented annually to the ship or aviation squadron (one in the Pacific Fleet and one in the Atlantic Fleet) that has achieved the greatest improvement during the preceding year in operational readiness, inspections, retention and improvement in the Battle Efficiency Award program
"The credit for the Arleigh Burke Award goes to the crew of this submarine for their outstanding performance during cutting edge operations while being deployed," said Cmdr. David Minyard, Columbus' commanding officer. "It is truly an honor to be a part of such an elite command, and I am proud of each and every one of our Sailors."
Columbus is currently home ported at Naval Station Pearl Harbor and recently deployed.
