ROTA, Spain (NNS) -- Fleet and Industrial Supply Center (FISC) Sigonella Site Rota personnel loaded more than 140 pallets of material on board HSV 2 Swift Nov. 28 in support of Project Handclasp's humanitarian efforts in eastern Africa.

The donated material, originally off-loaded from the USNS Kanawha (T-AO 196) in September, included wheelchairs, baby cribs and toys. These items provide tangible and safe fun for children as well as medical mobility to those in need.

Project Handclasp, an official chief of naval operations' activity established in 1962 and headquartered in San Diego, is the only program of its kind in the world. It is a public-private partnership enterprise with corporations, public service organizations, non-government organizations and individuals throughout the United States.

Project Handclasp accepts and transports educational, humanitarian and goodwill material overseas on a space-available basis on U.S. Navy ships.

"[FISC] Rota is proud to be doing its part to support U.S. Naval Forces Africa's humanitarian efforts," said Trev Sterling, the site's deputy supply officer. "It's a great feeling to know our efforts here are going to help make a huge difference in many peoples lives."

FISC Sigonella, the newest of seven supply centers under Commander, Fleet and Industrial Supply Centers (COMFISCS), provides operational logistics, business and support services to fleet, shore and industrial commands of the Navy, Coast Guard, Military Sealift Command, and other joint and allied forces in Europe, Africa, and Southwest Asia.

COMFISCS comprises more than 6,400 military and civilian logistics professionals operating as a single cohesive team providing global logistics services from more than 200 locations worldwide.

A component of the Naval Supply Systems Command, headquartered in Mechanicsburg, Pa., COMFISCS is part of a worldwide logistics network of more than 25,000 military and civilian personnel providing combat capability through logistics.
