Thales Deutschland to equip all German Navy supply ships
25 November 2009
FSTA Groundbreaking ceremonyA break ground ceremony has today been held at RAF Brize Norton, Oxfordshire, to initiate the construction of a building that will house the synthetic and ground training facility for flight, ground engineering and support personnel for the Future Strategic Tanker Aircraft (FSTA) programme. The ceremony marked the achievement of another successful milestone in progress towards the delivery of AirTanker operational capability.
The FSTA programme will replace the RAF’s current fleet of VC-10s and TriStars with 14 Airbus A330-200 aircraft, the first of which will be delivered in 2011. These new aircraft will be owned, supported and operated by AirTanker. AirTanker is a UK company created to provide the FSTA service to the UK MoD, under the world’s largest defence Private Finance Initiative (PFI) programme. AirTanker has five shareholders: Cobham, EADS, Rolls-Royce, Thales UK and VT Group plc.
AirTanker will also provide all support services, including construction of a state-of-the-art two-bay hangar, training, maintenance, flight operations, fleet management and ground services to enable worldwide air-to-air refuelling and air transport missions.
When complete, the new facility will house classrooms and the latest training technology, including a full flight simulator. AirTanker will use the facility for the training service to train aircrew plus ground engineering and support personnel in every aspect of the aircraft operation.
Group Captain JN Ager MA RAF, Station Commander at RAF Brize Norton, officiated by making the first dig on the brownfield site adjacent to the new AirTanker hangar and the Carterton/Brize Norton village road.
He was accompanied by personnel from the Ministry of Defence’s (MoD’s) Defence Equipment and Support FSTA Team, RAF Brize Norton and AirTanker as well as Thales UK, who is responsible for the construction and delivery of the FSTA training service from the new facility. Construction will be undertaken on behalf of Thales UK by Kier Moss Regional and is due to be complete by the end of 2011.
