Iran's Maleki rejects UAE official's claims on three islands
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Berlin, Nov 25, IRNA -- Former Iranian deputy foreign minister Abbas Maleki on Tuesday dismissed claims made by a leading official of the United Arab Emirates who alleged Iran had illegally seized the three Persian Gulf islands of Greater and Lesser Tunbs and Abu Moussa.
Addressing a Persian Gulf security conference in Berlin, Maleki said the three islands belonged to Iran and this had also been reflected in a memorandum of understanding between Britain and Iran.
Maleki was reacting to controversial remarks by the UAE speaker at the confab, accusing Iran of having "occupied the islands."
Iran has reiterated its sovereignty over the three Persian Gulf islands, saying UAE claims on the islands were baseless and unfounded.
Tehran has made clear that the three islands are and will remain an integral and permanent part of Iranian territory.
