SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- Pre-Commissioned Unit (PCU) Dewey (DDG 105) will arrive in San Diego Nov. 24 where the ship will be homeported after transiting from the Northrop Grumman Shipyard in Pascagoula, Miss.
During the transit, Dewey conducted various training and readiness drills demonstrating the ship's surface, and sub-surface defense capabilities. Additionally, they conducted day and night aircraft operations, certifying her flight deck crew for helicopter operations.
As part of Dewey's transit to San Diego, she made a port visit to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, where 20 crew members visited the Agape Home for Abused Girls. The Sailors cleaned and painted the home thus improving the habitability and quality of life for the young women staying there. Other Dewey Sailors also distributed teddy bears in support of the U.S. Navy League Puerto Vallarta Chapter for the Toys for Tots Project at the Refugio Infantil Santa Esperanza orphanage. Additionally, Project Handclasp medical and hygiene products were donated at each community relations event.
"As much as we enjoyed the hospitality and friendship of our shipbuilding team on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, we are looking forward to finally arriving home to our families in San Diego," said Dewey's Commanding Officer Cmdr. Warren R. Buller. "Dewey is a well-built ship with an exceptional crew, ready now to join our sister ships in the Pacific Fleet."
PCU Dewey was christened Jan. 26, 2008 by the ship's sponsor Mrs. Deborah Mullen, wife of Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Adm. Mike Mullen. Dewey is the 55th ship in the Arleigh Burke class of guided missile destroyers. It is also the third Navy ship named after Admiral of the Navy George Dewey, hero of the Battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish-American War.
Dewey will be the first warship commissioned in Orange County at a ceremony scheduled for Mar. 6, 2010, at Seal Beach Naval Weapons Station.
