Georgian president to visit Ukraine on Wednesday
19:31 16/11/2009 TBILISI/KIEV, November 16 (RIA Novosti) - Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili will arrive in Ukraine on November 18 for a three-day official visit, Georgia's presidential administration said on Monday.
The Georgian leader is expected to meet with his Ukrainian counterpart, Viktor Yushchenko, address a business forum, and attend the opening of a new Georgian embassy building, an administration spokesman said.
Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Valeriy Dzhigun said on Monday that a bilateral air transportation agreement would be signed during Saakashvili's visit. He did not give details on the deal.
Dzhigun said an agreement on cooperation between the two countries' justice ministries could also be signed.
Saakashvili last visited Ukraine a year ago, when he attended the 75th anniversary of the 1932-1933 Holodomor famine. Kiev has been seeking to have the famine internationally recognized as an act of genocide, prompting strong criticism from Moscow.
The pro-Western leaderships of Georgia and Ukraine having been seeking to join the Western military alliance, but at the NATO summit in April 2008, members refused to admit the post-Soviet countries into the Membership Action Plan (MAP), a key step for membership.
