EVERETT, Wash. (NNS) -- Maritime Expeditionary Security Squadron (MSRON) 9 conducted a quarterly field exercise at Naval Station Everett. Nov. 6-8.

A component of Naval Expeditionary Combat Command, MSRON 9's primary mission is force protection conducted through fleet support with operations around the world.
Four divisions make up the squadron.

Out of Everett, Command and Control Division 91 contains the Communications and Sensor detachments. These keep the squadron connected with satellites and radars. Boat Divisions 92 and 93 drill out of Everett and Portland, Ore., respectively. The patrol boats keep ports and ships safe in the operating area. Security Division 94 is made up of detachments from Spokane and Portland, Ore. They provide pier, perimeter and general security for the boats and squadron.

"There are a lot of pieces in the squadron," said Capt. Donato Masaoy, MSRON 9 deputy commander. "Each piece does its own training, and we're putting those pieces together in an operational environment."

MSRON 9 is worldwide deployable and provides security for various resources including ports and high-value assets such as humanitarian supplies going into a foreign port. Each division normally drills separately, so coordination played a large role in this exercise.

"We're trying to get our training teams to work together to make a scenario as realistic as possible to train our troops," said MSRON 9 Chief Staff Officer, Lt. Cmdr. Mark Kloster.

The three-day exercise included drills involving all divisions. Each drill was coordinated through a central location known as problem control.

"Each unit has its own training to conduct, so we coordinate the entire training scenario in problem control," said Chief Information Systems Technician Vincent Pope, MSRON 9. "One of the drills may require an increase in the force protection posture, so we're here to make sure all units work with each other."

"We increased our training level by 25 percent," said MSRON 9 Command Master Chief Randy Dobbins. "It's a big step toward our final certification, so we'll be qualified to mobilize and deploy."
