NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (NNS) -- USS Carl Vinson's (CVN 70) Security Department conducted a series of drills Nov. 5-10, in preparation for the ship's upcoming homeport change.
The drills were set-up throughout a five-day fast cruise to certify the ship's security team with scenarios that are possible while out to sea and in foreign ports. Security personnel practiced air, land and water attacks throughout the day.
"We are certifying the Security department, so we can stop in ports during the transit to San Diego," said Master-at-Arms 2nd Class (SW) Jamel Rossi, Alpha Section's Watch commander.
Security went through four phases in order to be certified to protect the ship in foreign ports. Each phase was vital to accomplishing the certification goal.
Phase one was an administration check and phase two was observing and approving the training aspect of Security. In the third phase, Security and Training department work together as a team to prepare for the fourth stage.
"We've completed phase one, two and three and now we're on phase four," said Rossi. "Phase four is where we collaborate with the ship while conducting drills."
The Afloat Training Team (ATG) comes aboard throughout the year and then for the five-day fast cruise to evaluate the Security team aboard. Drills will occur at random times throughout the day.
"We have no knowledge of what type of drill goes off or [when they will go] off," said Rossi. "But safety precautions are set to help the drills run smoothly."
Once Carl Vinson arrives in San Diego early next year, Security will conduct a phase five set of drills. The phase five drills are held randomly during the night to further qualify Security department's ability to defend the ship.
