11/12/2009 - SOUTHWEST ASIA -- Coalition airpower integrated with ground forces in Iraq and the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan in the following operations November 10 according to Combined Air and Space Operations Center officials here.
Air Operations in Afghanistan:
Asadabad
Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle aircraft flew armed overwatch for a friendly forces patrol on maneuvers in the village. A call for precision guided munitions was made for destruction of a known enemy fighting position when the patrol came under enemy small arms fire. The precision guided munitions were released on the target after the coordinates had been confirmed and area was clear of non-combatants. The enemy fighting position was destroyed.
Chahar Bagh
Navy F/A-18C Hornet aircraft provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. Armed enemy personnel were observed at an enemy location and presented a threat to the friendly forces. Shows of force were conducted to deter any potential enemy action and were declared successful when there was no enemy engagement of friendly forces.
Lashkar Gah
Marine AV-8B Harrier aircraft conducted armed overwatch for friendly forces. The friendly forces reported receiving enemy small arms fire from multiple enemy positions and requested air interdiction to terminate the enemy action. The points of origin for the enemy fire were confirmed and coordinates passed to the aircraft. Strafing runs were made on the various enemy fighting positions terminating enemy fire at each one.
Kandahar
Air Force B-1B Lancer aircraft were providing armed overwatch for a friendly forces convoy. The aircraft were also providing reconnaissance of the area. When the convoy reported enemy fire from all directions, the primary direction of enemy fire was confirmed and coordinates were passed to the aircraft. A precision guided munition was released on the enemy fighting position which terminated all enemy fire on the convoy.
F/A-18C aircraft were providing armed overwatch for friendly ground forces. The aircraft observed enemy forces about to engage the friendly ground forces and requested permission to engage the enemy. Precision guided munitions were employed on the enemy target resulting on destruction of the enemy forces and elimination of a threat to the friendly ground forces.
Gereshk
F/A-18C aircraft were providing armed overwatch for Coalition forces. When the Coalition forces reported taking enemy fire a show of force was performed (with flares expended) and the enemy fire stopped.
Jalalabad
Air Force F-16C Fighting Falcon aircraft were providing armed overwatch for a friendly forces convoy. When the aircraft observed suspicious forces approaching the convoy, shows of force were performed (with flares expended) to deter enemy intent. The shows of force were successful as no enemy action occurred.
Asmar
F-15E Strike Eagle aircraft flew armed overwatch for a friendly forces convoy. Shows of force were requested to deter any potential enemy action along the route of the convoy. The shows of force were successful as no enemy action was noted.
Qalat
Navy F/A-18E Super Hornet aircraft provided armed overwatch for Afghan National Army forces. The ANA forces reported taking enemy fire and a show of force was successfully conducted deterring the enemy action.
Shkin
F-16C aircraft conducted armed overwatch for friendly forces that were searching known enemy fighting positions. A show of force was requested to reassure the friendly forces that air power was in the area and to deter any potential enemy action. The show of force was considered successful when no enemy action was observed.
