Prosecutors to Cross-Examine Charles Taylor in War Crimes Trial

By VOA News
10 November 2009

Former Liberian President Charles Taylor has concluded his testimony at his war crimes trial in The Hague.

Prosecutors at the United Nations-backed Special Court for Sierra Leone are expected to begin their cross-examination later Tuesday.

In his final testimony, Mr. Taylor said he was handed over to the court as part of a "regime change" plan by the United States and Britain to overthrow his government.

The former Liberian leader is accused of supporting rebels that murdered, raped, enslaved and mutilated thousands of people in neighboring Sierra Leone during the country's civil war from 1991 to 2002.

He denies the charges.

Mr. Taylor was living in exile in Nigeria in 2006 when authorities there handed him over to the court.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP and Reuters.
