PORTSMOUTH, Va. (NNS) -- Sailors from amphibious assault ship USS Kearsarge (LHD 3) moved more than 1,000 new mattresses on board Oct. 20, accomplishing another milestone as they prepare to depart Norfolk Naval Shipyard.

"It's going to be nice to have new mattresses for the berthings on board," said Airman Margarita Huamantorres. "We have been moving mattresses from the pier to the ship for two days. The work is hard but the pay-off is a comfortable place to lay your head down at night."

The mattresses were packaged in cardboard boxes for easy transport from the warehouse to the ship.

"There is nothing worse than moving mattresses that are not packaged correctly," said Aviation Ordnanceman 3rd Class (SW/AW) Tanler Clemstine. "Any Sailor who has moved a mattress more than two feet knows having a sturdy box is a win-win situation."

Kearsarge berthing areas were inspected by senior leadership for habitability and discrepancies ranging from missing light bulbs, sheets, blankets, privacy curtains, broken lock mechanisms, and mattresses were identified and replaced.

"Quality of life for our Sailors is a top priority on board Kearsarge," said Senior Chief Master-At-Arms (SW/AW) Bruce Fezio, executive department leading chief petty officer. "The senior leadership on board recognizes the need for quality living and is committed to ensur[ing] our Sailors have those basic needs and also take proper care of them."

Kearsarge is currently completing a 10-month dry docked planned maintenance period and is scheduled to get underway this fall.
