SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- Naval Base San Diego (NBSD) hosted its first electronic waste turn-in event on Oct. 28, which was supported by personnel from Defense Reutilization Marketing Offices (DRMO), Navy Region Southwest (NRSW) Recycling, Clean Harbors and NBSD.

A parking lot on NBSD was used as a drop off location for shore commands to relinquish any government owned electronic devices or appliances that were no longer used.

"The efforts put into this event collected a month's worth of equipment in four hours," said Mark Edson, NBSD Installation Environmental Program manager.

Nearly 17,000 pounds of discarded electronics and component parts were collected and transferred to DRMO and 2,600 pounds of appliances were sent to NRSW Recycling. Material collected included 221 monitors, 65 computer processing units, 62 servers, 42 printers and numerous other items such as televisions, refrigerators, microwave ovens, fax machines, copiers and coffee makers. Approximately $430,000 worth of material was collected.

There was such an overwhelming response to the event that additional forklifts were needed. Due to team effort, both Clean Harbors and NRSW Recycling each loaned one to the event within minutes ensuring that all the items received were moved quickly.

"The success of this event couldn't have been achieved with out the combined support of DRMO, Recycling, Clean Harbors and NBSD," said Edson. "We are very excited to offer another turn-in opportunity to our afloat commands in December."

Over 9 tons of debris was diverted from hazardous waste, saving the taxpayer approximately $10,000 in disposal costs. Additionally, NBSD is being a good steward of the environment by hosting new and innovative events on base to reduce debris that would normally go to the landfill or hazardous waste.

The next electronic waste turn-in event for NBSD's afloat commands will be Dec. 9-10.
