Search, Rescue Mission Suspended

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (NNS) -- The Coast Guard suspended the search and rescue mission for the second pilot of the downed Navy T-34C Turbomentor training aircraft Nov. 1 at about 7 p.m.
Coast Guard crews found the body of Lt. Bret Travis Miller at approximately 4:40 p.m. Oct. 30, 11 miles northeast of Port Aransas after receiving a call someone from a floating rig which reported seeing something in the water.
The Coast Guard searched an estimated 131 hours and about 20,900 square miles during this search and rescue case.
United State Coast Guard Cutter (USCGC) Harry Claiborne will continue its mission of using side scanning sonar in an attempt to locate Lt. John Joseph Houston and the downed T-34 aircraft.
The U.S. Navy Salvage Dive Team will assist the crew of USCGC Harry Claiborne.
The aviators took off from Naval Air Station Corpus Christi Oct. 28 on a routine training mission and lost contact with the base tower at 3:17 p.m.
An investigation of the mishap is being conducted.
